BRIGADE CONCERNED ABOUT FAULTY CHIMNEYS IN TAUPO
Taupo Fire Brigade attended two fires and had good turnouts on Friday and Sunday; one when an electric boiler-jug ran dry, and the other at a private hotel. At three o'clock on Friday afternoon an electric jug at the house of Mrs H. Rose, in Wiheretia Street, boiled dry, set fire to a table and burnt the wall. The brigade extinguished the flame with a first-aid pump from the Landrover unit. Three machines, with two officers and nine firemen attended. They were on the spot very shortly afier the cal.1. Defective Chimneys The fire on Sunclay evening was at the Lake View private hotel. The steel flue from a spaee-heater was too close to the framing and set it alight. The proprietor, Mr J. Dunn, extinguished the fire with a garden hose. Three machines, with four officers and 11 firemen, attended. A brigade spokesman told the Times the brigade was concerned at the number of fires caused by faulty flues and fireplaces. There had been no fewer than 14 in the last three years, some of them total losses, he said. Chief offenders wTere space-heaters and slow-burning stoves ; often there was insuffisient space around flues, and some chimneys were not properly built, he said. ,
