SERIOUS CHARGE IN TOKAANU CASE
At the Taumarunui Court on Thursday, January 26, before Messrs p. Goldfinch and W. Thomas, J.P.'s, a young man 23 years of age was charged with committing rape on a married woman, 36 years of age, at Tokaanu on December 30. SeniorSergeant J. R. Williamson prosecuted and Mr L. Arnold appeared for the defence. Evidence was given that the scene of the alleged offence was 300 yards from the Tokaanu Hotel. The Bench considered a prima faele case had been made and accused was committed to the Supreme Oourt, Hamilton, for trial on February 7. The Bench decided to suppress the name of the complainant and a request for the suppression of accused's name was made by Mr Arnold. Senior-Sergeant Williamson said there was no previous criminal charge against accused and the poliee had no objection to the suppression of his name. In view of the fact that accused pleaded not guilty, find the, Supreme Court trial would be held in a few days' time, the Bench decided to suppress accused's name. Bail was renewed at self £50 cash and a surety of £50 cash.
