Taupo Beats Claudelands

The Taupo Cricket Club secured a meritorious win against a Claudelands team last weekend at Galloway Park, Hamilton, by a margin of 23 runs. Two years ago at Taupo against a somewhat stronger team from this Club a close game resulted in favour of Claudelands by only 11 runs. Weakened by the absence of the Nathoos and Reynolds, Taupo made up its strength by assistance from Hathaway, Buckingham and Thomas of (Reporoa, and found Hathaway's steady bowling particularly valuable. Winning the toss Claudelands opened with Hally and Gibson, who put on 25 for the first wicket before Hathaway's faster ball found Hally with his feet in front. Gibson was playing a forceful and stylish innings, but Frank McKean separated the second pair at 52 when he knocked back Allwood's leg stump. Sam McKean was fortunate to obtain an Ibw decision against Green and then had Winthrop stumped, but meanwhile Gibson was scoring at his ease. When Sutherland came into the attack his spin had the batsmen in difficulties immediately and in his third over tempted Gibson down the wicket to be smartly stumped by Satherly. From that point Hampton alone showed ability to handle the bowling of Sutherland and Hathaway who had returned to the attack. Lunch came with the score 120 for 7 but Hampton was finely taken on the boundary by Dixon and the innings closed for 124. Satherly, who played for Taupo three season's ago, was very neat behind the stumps and allowed only 4 byes. The Taupo openers, Roberts and Acres, gave their side their best start of the season with a partnership of 54. Roberts with strong driving selected with discretion the best balls for his purpose, whilst Acres was content with pushing singles and twos before he was bowled by Hemi. Buckingham suffered the same fate three balls later. Sutherland assisted Roberts with a partnership of 18 before he had to retire hurt with a nasty cut on his nose when hit by a rising ball. Two more wickets fell quickly, but when Sutherland returned he assisted Roberts to take the score past the Claudelands figure before the tea adjournment.

On resumption both batsmen were caught at the wicket off Green after adding another 43, and only a ninth wicket partnership of 15, between Satherley and Braddock gave Taupo a lead of 23 runs. Allwood and Hemi showed the best figures for Claudelands, but Green's bowling was a very steady effort. In Claudelands second innings most of the Taupo team bowled and the home team lost 7 wickets for 106 runs. Pat Dixon distinguished himself by taking two wickets, getting Gibson with his second ball, an outrageous shooter and by holding another good catch, whilst Roberts lured the batsmen into giving two catches to the field. Claudelands, 1st innings, 124 (Gibson 66, Hampton 29, Allwood 10, Hathaway 3 for 22, Sutherland 4 for 16, W. J. McKean 2 for 38, F. McKean 1 for 11, Buckingham 0 for 32). 2nd innings, 106 for 7 wickets (Allwood 20, Green 19, Winthrop 19, Hally 15, Roberts 2 for 14, Dixon 2 for 8, W. J. McKean 1 for 8, Satherley 1 for 6). Taupo, 147 (Acres 16, Roberts 70, Sutherland 22, Hemi 3 for 29, Allwood 4 for 43, Green 2 for 31, Gibson 1 for 9).
