MARCHING GIRLS GIVE GAY DISPLAY
Eight Visiting Teams The Taupo branch, New Zealand Marching Association, presented a highly successful and colourful display of marching at the Taupo Domain, foot of Tongariro Street, on Saturday afternoon, January 21. There was a large attendance, and the marching area, with its surrounding shade trees, provided an ideal setting. There were eight visiting teams of marching girls, while music was provided by the Rotorua Municipa'l Band. On arrival the teams assembled at the Taupo District High School, where refreshments were provided under the organisation of the Taupo Marching Association. The fall-in and the costume judging took place at the school, the various competitions taking place at the Domain following the street march from .Story's corner down Tongariro Street. The following teams took part: Legionaires (Rotorua), Instructor R. Durrant, Leader N. Durrant, colours white and cherry ; Caledonians (Opotiki), Instructor G. Lukies, Leader G. Rush, colours white and Royal Stuart; Royalettes (Rotorua), Instructor Mrs W. Barrow, Leader S. Gill, colours white and blue; Crusaders (Taupo), Instructor S. George. Leader S. George, colours black and white; Keenettes (Whakatane), Instructor R. Yail, Leader S. Leith, colours white and red ; Foresters (Tokoroa), Instructor B. Walker, Leader G. Medhurst, colours green and white ; Red Cadets (Edgecumbe) . Instructors L. Yincent and I. Robb, Leader M. Thacker, colours red and white; Glen Aires (Taumarunui), colours blue and lemon; Troubadors (Taumarunui), colours lemon and black.
Both the Taupo Crusader Junior team (Instructor H. Rewa, Leader E. Rewa, colours white) and the Taupo Crusader Midget team took part in the street march, and gave display marches at the Domain.
Following completion of the competitions a display of massed marching was given by the 11 teams present, providing a charming spectacle which earned the enthusiastic applause of the gathering. The prizes were presented on the ground by Mrs L. Sharp (Taupo), the Centre Chief Judge, Mr Tony Pil- | cher, announcing the competition re*
sults as follows : Costumes competition : Caledonians first, Crusaders second, Legionaires third. Street march : Royalettes first Legionaires second, Caledonians third. Competition for open leader : Legionaires (Mrs N. Durrant) first, Royalettes second, Caledonians third. Display : Royalettes first, Caledonians second, Glen Aires third. Open championship : Legionaires first, Caledonians second, Royalettes third. Aggregate points : Caledonians (Buckleigh Rose Bowl). Novice leader: ForestI ers (G. Medhurst). Novice team championship : Troubadours. Leading instructor : Mr R. Durrant, Legionaires. The judges were Mr Tony Pilcher, Centre Chief Judge; Miss C. T'aylor (Whakatane), Miss B. Lambert and Miss J. Isdale (Opotiki). In conversation with the Taupo Times following the prize-givin, Mr Pilcher stated that the judges were much impressed with the beauty and suitability of the ground, which was the best they had seen this season, and was the only one they knew of with trees close enough to enable spectators to enjoy their shade. Mr Pilcher also paid a tribute to the Taupo organisation for the good work put into the arrangements by all its oflicers and helpers, and said the day had been very successful. with good marching, good music and good entertainment for the spectators. A dance held in the War Memorial Hall in the evening was well attended.
