HOLIDAY NOTES FROM HATEPE
There has been a marked increase in the number of visitors at Hatepe over the present suceessful holiday season, and those who refused to be depressed by the rainy period have been rewarded by bright days. Anglers have been contented, with fish well distributed at the "rip," and many limit catehes have been reported both at the river month and by boat fishermen. Trout up to and 8| pounds have been taken. The beach has been crowded with sun-bathers, and gay with bright costumes and beach umbrellas, wMle a fleet of dinghies, children in canoes, yachts, speedboats and larger launches, and up to 15 fishermen in the "rip," have combined to make a happy holiday scene. Development in the district proceeds steadily. A bulldozer has recently been utilised in levelling sections and removing large pines which were in the way of future electric power poles. Houses are in course of erection for Mr W. Werkhoven, and Mr J. Kempton, of Wellington, while one of modern type has been eompleted for Mr McMillan, of Palmerston North. The new concrete traffic bridge to carry highway traffic over the river is an appreciated development, but until the new approaches are sealed the public, including the more thoughtful motorists, are sufferers from the dense dust raised by the speed of frequently passing vehicles driven at high speed by thoughtless motorists. This, combined with the eurved approach to the bridge, constitutes a hazard in dry weather. Recently Messrs W. Werkhoven and J. Kempton had the misfortune, when returning from a fishing trip, to lose a new outboard motor when some 300 yards from shore. Efiorts by Mr Bill Forsythe, well-known at Wairakei, who was holiday ing at Hatepe, to recover the motor with the aid of his under-water gear, were frustrated by bad weather. Later the motor was located and recovered with the help of a young diver and found to be little the worse for its immersion. An earthquake jolt thought to come from Ngauruhoe's increasing activity was felt at Hatepe at 1.50 a.m. on December 29. Mr and Mrs W. Irwin, of Gisborne, with their son, Mr Mark Irwin, wellknown All Black, who is enjoying his vacation from the Otago Medical School, have been in residence over the holidays. Since the completion of his new house Mr H. J. Grieve has entertained a number of house guests, including Mr and Mrs C. Wallers, Mr and Mrs Blackmore, Mr and Mrs Greer and Messrs Wattie and Rainbow, all of Hastings. Mr Grieve's daughter, Mrs Pain, and family, of Napier, have also been at Hatepe. Miss Haromi Morehu has been appointed to the staff of the Taumarunui School. Miss Rereahu Morehu, who is at Ardmore Training Oollege, has been chosen as a member of a party of students who are to tour in Australia in March to study geography. Miss Teresa Morehu is joining the nursing staff of the Taumarunui Hospital. — Own Correspondent.
