COUNTY'S FIRST FIRE

The Taupo Volunteer Fire Brigade and the Taupo County staff were called out to a scrub fire on December 31, some three miles from Taupo on the old Oruanui Road. Arriving first on the scene the Brigade found the fire, which had started near the road, burning fiercely and the lack of any water in the vicinity prevented effective action. Mr Hickford, County Dverseer, secured Mr L. Amundsen's bulldozer, which was fortunately already loaded on a transporter, and with this Mr Amundsen bulldozed a break round the fire which enabled the fire-fighters to hold the flames back. Mr A. H. O'Reefe, County Commissioner, warmly praised both the Brigade and Mr Amundsen, stating that the latter's work undoubtedly enabled the fire to be held with only seconds to spare.
