« A set of three stamps commemor-' ating the Southland Centennial were issued by the Post and Telegraph Department on Monday, January 16. The values are 2d, 3d and 8d, the first two values being horizontal in format and the 8d vertical. The 2d stamp depicts whalers harpooning a whale m Foveaux Strait, the 3 d pictorially symbolises the agricultural and pastoral industry of the province, while the 8d has a picture of the famous takahe or notornis, the recent discovery of which long after it was thought to be extinct created worldwide interest among bird-lovers and ornithologists.
