YOUTHFUL INTEREST IN SOUTHLAND TORCH
Interest in the passage through Taupo at 2.21 a.m. on Saturday last, January 14, of the Southland centennial torch relay from historic Waitangi, Bay of Islands, to Invercargill, was not confined to adults. Among those present were four young people whose presence provided a link between the early settlers of Taupo, whose descendants they were, and the historic event they witnessed. Those referred to were Miss ^Teresa Crowther, whose grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. G. Wehringo, and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Crowther, were early settlers in Taupo, and three great-grandchildren of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Rickit, Hendon Gillies, William Gillies and Mark Ogden. Expressing determination to be present, and evidencing a sense of history, one of the group said : " We've got to be there to see the torch, nothing like this has ever happened in Taupo before, and we will be able to tell about it for years."
