BOXING DAY SPEED BOAT REGATTA
Programme Highlights The popular annual speedboat regatta of the Taupo Motor Boat and Aquatic Sports Club is to be held on Boxing Day. As usual, traffic on the Lakefront highway between Titiraupenga Street and Tongariro Street will be diverted. Time trials will commence at 10.30 a.m. and the race programme at 12.30 p.m. Race highlights will be the Taupo Ohampionship, starting at 1.30 p.m., open to any auto-engined boat, the V-bottom Ohampionship at 3 p.m., the Taupo Baunch Ohampionship (boats owned by club members) at 3.15 p.m., and the Hydroplane Ohampionship at 3.30 p.m.
The well-known Taupo-built boat, Susan Leigh, raced by Messrs D. A. McLeod and Des Griffen, and driven by Les Griffen, will attempt $o break the Australasian Unlimited Unrestricted Kilometre speed record. This is at present held by Mr Len Southward's Redhead with 101.26 m.p.h. The course will be surveyed by Mr L. Cheal.
Two other boats plan to go over the same course. Mr R. L Griffin (Kawerau Club) will attempt to break the V-bottom 75 cub. in. record with his boat Rimbo, and Mr F. Tapper will attempt the 266 cub. in. record in Puddy Tat These kilometre events are scheduled to take place between 2 and 2.30 p.m., subject to weather conditions. A competing attraction wiil be a bathing beauty competition. The Orusaders Marching Girls' Olub wiLl have a stall on the Lake Front, at which hot water and sandwiches, in addition to soft drinks, ice cream and. other light refreshments will be available.
