On Thursday of last week, following an inspection by Mr K. E. Young, the new Sports Ground was topdressed with sulphate of ammonia and superphosphate. On Saturday morning last a working bee, organised by the combined Sports Committee, met to remove stones and pumice from the surface of the Oval as a preliminary to its being consolidated by rolling. The photograph shows portion of the ground looking south towards the War Memorial Hall. The moveable spray pipeline of the irrigation system may be seen. This will provide a supply of 80 gallons a minute from the Waikato River and will be able to apply the equivalent of one inch of rain over the whole sports area in 24 spraying hours. Members of the working bee, left to right:— Messrs Dick Fraser, M. Orr, Ces Badely, John Delaney, O. Delaney, Hugh Knight, L. H. Cheal, G. W. Foote, R. Foote, Ian Logan, P. Fry (and Janice Fry), G. A. Acres (Chairman, Sports Committee). —Gillies Smith, photo.
