BREAD ASSURED OVER HOLIDAYS
Matters connected with the bread supply for T-au^o and district over Ihe holiday period were diseussed at a meeting in the Borougli Council Chainher on Morulay, November 21, with the Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, presiding. Mr R. Boord, M.P., was present at the invitation of the Mayor. Others present were Mr T. Mc-
Leod bakery proprietor, of Napier ; Mr W. T. Leadbetter, Napier-Taupo freight service operator ; Councillors K. O. Lewis, J. E. Barton and C. S. Currie; Mr W. L. Haines, chairman of the Bread Retailers' Oommittee ; Mr J. W. Birnie; Mesdames A. S. Scott and K. Ileid ; Messrs Keehan, Lee, Braddock, Kilford, W. N. Morris, Arbuckle aiul J. McDonald. The Mayor, opening the meeting, said he had been asked by tlie bread retailers to conveue it, in ari eftort to solve the holiday bread supply problem. He asked Mr Ilaines to open the discussion. Mr Haines said tliat as the bakery to be established by Messrs Sutherland and Wishart could not be in operation before about February, considerably increased supplies would be requi red from Napier. Retailers could cope with the 2500 loaves weekly at present brought from Mr McLeod's Napier bakery by Mr Leadbetter. But it would be necessary to obtain 10,000 weekly from Napier, to augment Mr Braddock's local output, over the holidays. Difficulties faced were that the freight being paid by the Government on the bread from Napier was not adequate; and the problem of handling the bread and getting it on to the slielves in Taupo when it arrived. Mr Leadbetter gave details of problems involved, including tiie fact that three hours packing and loading bread in Napier were his responsibility, and delivery at Taupo also took three hours. Th'e extra amount needed over the holidays meant that special vehicles would be required, as the amount could not he carried as a part load only as hitherto. It was immtioned tliat, over the Cliristmas and New Year week-ends the last deliveries of bread from Napier would be on tlie Fridays, with next deliveries on the following Wednesdays. Mr Braddock would bake on the Saturdays of these two weekends provided retailers would handle the bread on Saturdays. Mrs Scott suggested no one would object if the retailers opened for a time on the Saturdays for tlie sale of bread. Mr McLeod assured the meeting that he would defmitely be able to supply Ihe bread required. After full discussion Mr Boord undertook to place the freight position before the Minister for Industries and Commerce and to arrange for the Department's offieers to confer with Mr Leadbetter. rFhe Mayor, thanking Mr Boord for his attendance, said the prohlems of delivery at the Taupo end were for Ihe local people to solve. Mr Haines, retailers' chairman, said it was clear that Ihe bread needed for the holiday period would he available.
