TAUPO BOWLING CLUB'S OPENING DAY

The Taupo Bowling Club's season i was opened on Sunday afternoon, j November 6, by the President, Mr R. I McMillan. There was a large attend- [ ance o f members and visitors, includ- ( ing members of the Arawa (Rotorua), [ Ngongotaha, Tokoroa, Putaruru and j The Chateau Clubs. Also among the visitors were the I following representatives of the Waikato — Thames Valley Centre: — Mr S. B. Quintrell, Immediate Past President; Mr C. A. Finch, Secretary; and Mr T. D. Luxton, member of the Greens Advisory Committee and past president. Mr J. G. Henderson, President of the Bay of Plenty Centre, was also present. Mr McMillan thanked members of the Committee and all who had helped in getting the green ready, and mentioned that a considerable amount had been spent on installing a waterpump and spray system. This would enable them to give the green as much water as necessary. The Club were negotiating tor use of adjacent land and hoped to go ahead before long with getting another green down, which would provide for more playing and also enable the present green to be spelled when advisable. While acknowledging the help that had been received, Mr McMillan said the Committee would welcome even more support from members during the next off-season. Mr Quintrell then spoke briefly, saying that he noted considerable improvements, including the club- house, since his last visit, and congratulated the Club on the amenities and appearance of the grounds. Mr Henderson referred to two bad things in bowling, namely short bowls and long speeches, and extended good wishes from the Bay of Plenty Centre. The President then called upon two of the Club's old stalwarts, Mes* srs H. J. ("Jack") Wells and J. Hs ("Pop") Marlow, to throw up the first kitty and play the first bowl respectively, the announcement being received with a round of applause. Results of the afternoon's play were as follows: — Arawa 19 v A. Smith, Stanley, Columb and Attwood 19; Ngongotaha 24 v Baumberg, Tito, Fulljames and Crickett 15; Centre Reps. 17 v Colbeck, Darlington, Thompson and Kunac 22; Tokoroa 22 v McMillan, Mahanga, Tunnicliffe and Marlow 22; Chateau 12 v McGreevy, Tierney; Currie and Mclsaac 20; Putaruru 25 v Clark, Howie, Smith and Banks 18 ; Logan, Elliott, Fraser and Bostock 25 v Pennycock, Morris, Rewa and R.
