TAUREWA WELFARE LEAGUE

The Taurewa branch of the Maori Women' s Welfare League entertained other branch members and visitors at their second birthday celebrations. The president, Mrs Mitareta Hepi, presidecl, and opening prayer was led by Mrs N. R. Moana. Action songs and group songs by the Taurewa Junior League members, led by their tutor, Mrs L. Turanga, were then given. Various guests of honour present

were introducel to the large audience by Mrs Hepi. A brief report of the branch's year's activities was read by Mrs Herkt. The District Maori Warden Officer, Mr G. Whakarau, was guest speaker, and spoke on the benefits of the League and the main reasons why it was formed throughout New Zealand. Speeches were also given by Mr Hickey, headmaster of the National Park School ; Mr Pratt, Okatopo School teacher ; Mr Bernard, Wellington; Mr Manunui, Taurewa Trtbal Secretary ; Miss Quail, Missionary Sister ; Mrs Webber, Buropean pioneer ; Mrs Paurini, Papakai branch; Mrs Witika, Raurimm branch. Sprays of myrtle were presented by Mrs Hepi to Messrs Hickey, Whatarau, Manunui, Bernard, Pratt, Whyte, Webber and Evans, Mesdames Whatarau, Hickey, Heath, Webber, Evans, Witika, Paurini, McMahon and Miss Quail. Competition winners were announced and trop.hies presented by Mrs Hepi as follows : Te Moana Aroha Aggregate Cup, Mrs Winnie Manunui ; Mitareta Runner-up Bowl, Mrs Theresa Moses ; consolation prizes, Mrs M. Ruhe, Mrs A. Thompson, Mrs M. Herkt, Mrs L. Turanga, Miss B. Kuru ; consolation gifts, Mrs Phillips, Miss T. Anania ; non-competitors, Mrs M. White and Mrs Shelford. A heautiful statue of the Child J'esus and St. Joseph was then presented to Mrs Hepi by Mrs Moana on behalf of the Taurewa branch. Mrs Paurini lit the candle on the birthday cake, Mrs Webber blew the candle out, and Mrs Witika cut the cake. An attractive display of the year's competitions drew a number of favouralble comments. After supper the evening continued with a dance.
