Taupo v. Kaingaroa

Only four of the Taupo team that beat the Chateau were available for the 12-a-side match against Kaingaroa, at Kaingaroa, on Sunday, November 13. As events turned out it /was fortunate that the team was strengthened by the return, for this match at least, of Bert Collett, who \ ' captained the Club three years ago. Taupo won the toss and put the home team in to bat. Jack Nathoo immediately had the batsmen in trouble with some prodigious off breaks, and obtained three wickets in his first three overs without giving away a run. Graham McKean grazed the off stump with his first ball for the Club. but had the misfortune to fail to remove a bail. The batsman had collected six runs off him when bowled four balls later. Ray Nathoo worked up a good pace to secure three wickets at the end of the innings, including one clean bowled that took the bail a distance of 261 yards. Facing a moderate total of 108, Taupo started disastrously with the loss of two early wickets. Simpkins, left arm, and Nutter were bowling steadily and Collett gave two fairly easy chances off the first three balls, but he survived and Sutherland who looked vcry confident succumbed to an l.b.w decision. The position became grimmer when Jack Nathoo was bowled round his legs and three wickets were down for 15. Collett was missed again when the Kaingaroa captain reached and stopped a drive which he failed to hold after about four despcrate attempts, Collett then settled down to dominate play and the fast outfield brought him fours with regularity. Although he gave chances, Sam McKean stayecl long enough for his four runs to assist in the addition of 32 runs for the sixth wicket and Ray Nathoo and Graham McKean saw the total taken by Collett up to 74. With Sam McKean's Jeparture Collett began to farm the bowling, and he carried out his policy very effectively. When Pat Dixon joined him in almost the last line of defence 35 runs were still required. He played through one maiden over and a few balls until Collett took Taupo into the lead and completed his century in the s;ime stroke. A very lcngthy tea adjournment was taken with the total at 156 and at this stage Collett retirecl for 136 including 27 fours rnade in about 90 minutes. The innings closed soon afterwards without addition to the score, Pat Dixon being the second highest scorer with 6 runs. In Kaingaroa's second innings Sam McKean struck a length in his second over and puzzled the batsmen with his well-flighted mixture of off and leg breaks. At the close of play Kaingaroa were 68 in the lead with two wickets in hand, and Taupo were left winners on the first innings.
