ATTRACTIONS FOR VISITORS
The two-day Open Golf Tournament held last week^jl the Taupo Golf Club's course may justly be regarded as a step forward in the history of the game in Taupo. Whjpl Club has held one day tournaments at the Christmas-New:^B period, and at least one Labour Day tournament, all of wfril have been popular events, this is the first ladies' tournam^^S well as the first two day tournament, attempted. That it ra over a hundred entries, and that ninety six were accepteffiS eight of whom were Taupo players, indicates strikingly thiS traction to visitors constituted by the Taupo Golf Cours3 The Ladies' Club is to be congratulated on its inipim| and its success, which latter, in view of the fact that entraljii the tournament eame from Clubs in many parts of the tf|§| Island, demonstrates the value to a tourist resort of a golf as attractive and as widely known as the Taupo Club's couj3 Not that it is to be regarded as being, in any sense, a proposition. Far from it. But that it has, and will increa^H have, a considerable infiuence in attracting visitors to Taupo! fact that is of great importance to the whole communijtyjS The need to provide attractions for visitors has beeusraS sed recently in connection with the setting up of a PubUo^ra tions Office in Taupo. Another similar attraction of importalp the Taupo Bowling Club's green, and the proposed provisioJB second green, which was referred to at the recent onening dMB bowling season, as reported in last week's Times, is a 19 augury both for the Club itself and for the town and 'disS!l| Amenities of another sort, each with their own particular/^H in encouraging the tourist trade, are the War Memorial HaQra the new A.C. Baths, the latter shortly to be augmented bjfjm addition of a warm swimming pool. That two national eoffl ences have already been held in the Hall suggests that^Jfl| outstanding suitability for such gatherings becomes morelra known, it will become the venue of many more. Another attraction for visitors that is now looked forraj to by many is the speedboat regatta organised by the ||ra Motor Boat Club. The success of this function is an addiffl indication of the value to a tourist resort of providing whatm be called extra attractions for visitors. While Taupo' s maraj tractions may be its fishing, and the charm oi its sceneAl several amenities vve have mentioned are, each in their S6njj ways, most valuable complementary attractions. > ;jfl It must be the aim of all interested in the welfareqfa town and district to increase the number of such attraction^J urgently needea amenity, at present conspicuous by its abs^ is the provision of dressing sheds and conveniences for vi||j at the increasingly popular Laketront bathing beach at thftM mile peg. The need for these has been recognised by theBoriw Council? and provided for in its plan for the development m Laketront. It is a need that could well be worked out in aet|| plans and then persistently urged upon the Government as thing deserving of financial help. '-'41
