OVERSEAS CENTIPEDE FOUND IN TAUPO
When a transport truck was being unloaded recently at Messrs Odlin'a premises in Heuheu Street, tho manager, Mr Peter Staines, noticeci on the tray of the truck an unusuai creature, some six inches in lengthThe body was about three-eighths ot an inch in width, and the numerous legs were about an inqh in length. The appearance of the animal's "nippers" suggested caution, and with due care the centipede, as it was thought to be, was manoeuvred into a tin and presented to the Taupo - Times for identification. Dr J. S. Armstrong, to whom it was submitted, confirmed that it was a centipede, but not a native of New Zealand, and stated that it probably reached New Zealand from the Is* lands, perhaps Fiji, in a case of bananas. It would be capable of inflicting a painful scratch half an inch long. Such wounds were caused by the "nippers" being applied wide open and then moved together.
