COUNCIL AGREES TO TEMPORARY ADDITIONS TO SHOP

In a letter which caine before the Borough Council on October 19 Mr 1). W. Hansby asked the Council to re-consider his' application for a permit to extend the shop premises in Tongariro Street, occupied by him as a pharmacy. The letter stated that it appeared that the Council had refused to grant the peria it to roof over an existing alley-way, to provide urgently needed storage space, because one of the walls forming the alley-way was of a temporary ua ture. (The area is now one wherein permanent materials are required) . Mr Hansby stated that he was prepared to enter into a bond to replace the temporary wall, if it were removed at any time, with a well constructed concrete wall to the Coun•cil's satisfaction. He would also be prepared, under bond, to have the proposed extension removed at the expiration oi 10 years if the Council so desired. It was imperative for his business that he should have more storage .space. and he had to provide if hiiuself as the landlords were not prepared to do so. Cr Uowis stated that she had seen prermses, on a wet day, and the yard at the back was disgraceful. It was not the fault of the lessee, Mr Hansby. She did not know how they were getting away with it. Storage space was necessary and proper wasliing facilities were needed and were not there. She was sorry the Health Tnspector was not there to give inforination about it. Cr Barton said he had not seen the premises. Could councillors who had seen tlieni say whether Mr Hansby \s proposal would improve the conditions or otherwise? Cr Currie said that sanitary conditions at the rear of the premises were rather shocking. hui; that had actually nothing to do with Mr Hansby \s storage space request. Mr Hansby's proposal would overcorne his difficulties and would improve the general position. Cr Lewis agreed * with Cr Currie. Cr Yedder said that allowing the application to go through would improve eonditions in the shop, and isolate it from the filthy eonditions at the back. He supported sanction for the request. The restrictions as to sanitation had not been enforced in the area for tliree years.

The Mayor queried wliat would happen to Ihe alterations if the lessee vaeared ihe premises. Cr Yedder thouglit there would be a bond to remove the additions in 10 years, or wiieii Ihe lessee vaoated llie premisos, if that oemirred earliei*. Cr burnley considered that the landlords should do the improvements. not the lessee. rChe Health Inspector should see the area. Cr Young thought they should be firm and require compliance with the by-laws. Cr Currie moved that the Council agree to Mr Hansby's application subject to approval by the Health Inspector. Cr Barton seconded the inotion, as ii would mean an improveiDent. 1 1 e considered Ihe landlord should be "stirred up" to improve the sanitary eonditions in the area. The inotion was carried without dissent. I)oayn vi tbut'
