MEETING OF TONGARIRO WELFARE LEAGUE COUNCIL

The Tongariro District of Maori Women's Welfare League met at the residence of Mrs Kendall, Erua, on September (3, Mrs N. R. Moana presiding. Greetings were extended to the large gathering by Mrs Moana ; Mrs R. Wright, Senior Lady WTelfare Oflicer ; Mrs Heatli, Erua branch president ; and Mrs M. Hepi, Taurewa branch president. Apologies were received from the Papakai and Oraukura-Mangaliou-ltou branches. Waimarino was also absent. Reports read by Mrs Tutauha and Mrs Moana showed the great interest of league members and supporters in the district in the aims and beliefs of the organisation. Mrs Wright reviewed the league's development since its formation in the district, and wished the council every success in the future. Following Mrs Wright's talk the council decided to try to procure in the future a mucli-needed ambulance service for Ihe isolated areas of the district. Two trophies were accepted for the council from Mrs Wright and Mrs Mitareta Hepi. A donation was also handed to the council by the Erua branch toward the Maori Colleges' appeal for funds for building and renovation. The guest speaker was Mrs Murphy, who gave an interesting talk on her war experiences in London and also a travelogue from England - to New Zealand. A vote of thanks was accorded, and a beautiful shoulder spray made by an Erua branch mernber, was presented to Mrs Murphy by Mrs Moana. Delicious home-cooked food on attractive tables was served by the Erua members. Observer was Mrs Ma aka, North Auckland. Mrs Wright acted as competition judge, results being as follows : Maori arts and erafts, Taurewa 1, Erua 2 ; modern arts and crafts, Taurewa and Erua equal 1 ; sewing, Taurewa 1, Erua 2 ; health, Taurewa 1 ; horticultural, Taurewa and Erua equal 1 ; cookiug, Erua 1, Taurewa 2.
