FREE KINDERGARTEN CAMPAIGN FUND NOTES

Friends of the Taupo Free Kindergarten Association had a delightful afternoon on September 24, when the grounds'' and garden of Mr and Mrs L. Steplienson weue open for inspection in aid of the Association's campaign to raise funds for the establishment of a free kindergarten in Taupo. Under perfect weather conditions the gardens were seen to full advantage, and the tlowers, flowering shrubs and trees were greatly admired. Among the highlights were many llne dall'odils, and a weeping cherry in full 1 lower surrounded by a- bed of m a n y - li u ed p o 1 y a n tlius . Afternoon tea was served in the adjacent grounds oi' Mr and Mrs F. Bostock. The Committee wishes to express their thanks to Mr and Mrs Steplienson for their kindness in throwing their grounds open, and in donating a quantity of chrysanthenuims and shasta daisy plants for sale in aid of the Association's funds, and to Mr and Mrs Bostock for their similar kindness. Mr E. F. Wright, treasurer, reports that proceeds of the afternoon totalled £14 0s 9d, being £9 8s 3d from admission tickets and plant saies, and £4 12s 6d from afternoon teas. The Committee is having a large signboard erected on the Laughton Street kindergarten site. This has been made without cost to the Association by Mr J. H. Marlow, from ma roria Is given by Messrs Reid and Clarke, builders, and Bruce Bennett, plumbing contractor, to all of whom the Committee's Ihanks are due. Another welcome gift to the Association is a picture by Mrs Avis Acres, who has donated it to be raffled for the kindergarten fund. A pastel drawing, it' is ideally suited for a child's room, and has been exhibited in a well-known Hamilton bookshop window throughout the recently held New Zealand Book Week. The Committee has arranged to place a number of "change boxes" in certain shops in the town, in which members of the public wishing to assist the fund may place donations ot small change from time to time during their shopping visits. Arrangements are in hand for a Cabaret and Dance in the War Memorial Hall at 8 p.m. to-morrow, Saturday, October S. Those who missed the previous successful cabaret evening will welcome this popular entertainment. Tables may be reserved ar the Taupo Book Club. The Committee announce that they will later have for sale in aid of the fund Christmas cards which are being printed from a design specially done for the Association by Mrs Avis Acres.
