BREAD DOWN AGAIN
Goveinment Paying Freight Advice was received on Friday evening, September 23, by Mr W. L. Haines, chairman of the Taupo Bread Retailers' Committee, from the Department of Industries and Commerce, Wellington, that it had been decided that the Government would pay the freight, of l£d per loaf, on bread brought from Napier to Taupo to make up the local supply shortage consequent on the recent closing of Mr A. M. Smith's bakery. Earlier, as reported in the Times of September 16, the Committee had been advised by the Department that the Government would not - pay the freight, but that the local price per 21b loaf could be raised to 9d to cover the freight. The price reverted to 7£d at the beginning of this week. The matter had again been taken up with the Minister, the Hon. D. J. Eyre, by Mr Ray Boord, M.P., following the announcement that no freight subsidy would be paid, and the later decision to pay the freight followed these discussions.
