TOKAANU AND WAIRAKEI HOTELS
The Annual Report of the Tourist and Publicity Department for the year ended March 31 last, presented to Parliament last month, states that trading results by the Department's hotels for the year were the ,best on record. Revenue showed a cash surplus over expenditure of £41,000, which included substantial repairs and renovations but did not include interest on capital or depreciation. Tenders had been called for a new accommodation block to replace some of the buildings at the Tokaanu Hotel which were seventy years old: Plans had been prepared for the provision of a number of rooms with private baths, at the Hotel Wairakei. Total revenue at Wairakei showed an increase over last year and the daily guest average also rose. The Report stated that noise from the steam bores was now negligible. The back of the hotel was in urgent need of painting and internal renovation, and the staff quarters and cottages needed new roofing. It was suggested that a new public bar be built on the present bus parking area because of congestion in the present premises. Both accommodation revenue and bar takings at Tokaanu Hotel showed an increase over the previous year.
