WOMEN'S INSTITUTE
There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Taupo Countrywomen's Institute held in Rickit's Hall on Wednesday, August 17. New members welcomed were Mrs Dickson and Mrs Frost, also' Mrs Knight, who has transferred from another group. All were presented with floral sprays. Birthday sprays were presented to Miss McClymont, Mrs Attwood, Mrs Bostock and Mrs Gumbley. Mrs Stowe gave a report on Gardening Circle activities including the Circle's participation in the Arbor Day celebration at the School. when shrubs and perennials were planted. Mrs Davis read a poem entitled " Vicious Circle," very appropriate to the times. The Roll Call dealt with school day incidents, and reminded members of the times they got the strap and why they did or did not deserve it. Mr R. H. Ward gave an interesting talk on native birds in Taupo, with special reference to tuis and bellbirds, commenting on the increased number of tuis jseen in the town compared with thirty years ago. He mentioned several birds, comparatively uncommon in most districts which could however be seen in bush areas in the Taupo district, instancing the rifleman, white-head, and North Island robin. Winners of monthly competitions were : — Cluster of flowers, Mrs Gumbley; Best bloom, Mrs Davis; Vegetables, Mrs Glass; Greatest number of things in a match-box, Mrs Potter.
