LOCAL ARBOR DAY CELEBRATION
Arbor Day was celebrated by the Gardening Circle of the Taupo Countrywomen's Institute, and by the Taupo Horticultural Society, when a working part.v consisting of about 15 members of the Cirele and nine or 10 members of the Society gathered al the Taupo District High School. They were assisted by school children under Ihe guidanee of Mr S. K. Christensen, of the school slaff. A hund red ahelia floribunda hedge plants and half a dozen shrubs, donated by the Society, were planted, together with perennial garden plants donated by the Circle, members of the latter also renovating two garden beds planted hy them sorne time ngo. Members of the Gardening Circle later met at Mrs W. King's home for afternoon tea, when notes tnken at Mr Brandenburg's recent lecture were discussed. An interesting exhibit was a sntall spray, in bud, of the shrub Edgeworth ia papyrifera, also known as Yellow Daphne, which grows some six feet in height and when in fiower is covered with yellow blooms.
