WIDENING OF LAKEFRONT ROAD AT WAIPAHIHI

Proposed Taking Of Half ~ Chain Strip At the meeting of the Borough Council on Wednesday, July 6, a letter was received from the Minister of Works, the Hon. W. S. Goosman, advising that the National Roads Board had reconsidered its road wid^ ening proposals within - Taupo Borough, and now required that provision should be made in the Town Planning Scheme for the widening of State Highway No... 23 to one and a half chains. The portion of roadway affected is the Lakefront highway between the Old Napier Road and Taharepa Road. A plan attached to Mr Goosman's letter shows that the Roads Board proposes that a strip of land half a chain in width be taken along the eastern side of the portion of road mentioned. In this area the original roadway is one chain only in width, though nearer the town it is wider. In the Borough Council's Town Planning Scheme No.- 1 the portion of road mentioned was left * at its original width, but an objection to this was lodged by the Ministry of Works. At that time the Ministry of Works suggested that a half-chain strip be taken along the western, or lake, side of the road. The Ministry's objection was heard by the Borough Council, at the sitting held for the hearing of objections to. the Planning Scheme, but no decision was given pending further consideration of the matter. It is now proposed that the extra width required be taken on the side of the highway further from the Lake, and the Planning Scheme is to be modifled accordingly. In due course the modification will be publicly notified and property owners who may wish to lodge objections to the modified scheme will have the usual statutory period . in which to do so, as was the case when the original scheme was promulgated. The carrying out of the proposed widening will affeet several buildings, including the store of Messrs W. L. Haines, Ltd-, which is situated on the area proposed to be included in the roadway. Taking of the land required will, of course, be suhject to payment of compensation. This is the responsibility of the Government, not of the Borough Council.
