WORK BEGINS ON STREET SEALING SCHEME
At the Borough Council meeting on » July 6, the Mayor, Mr J.E. Story, re- ■ ported that arrangements had been ■ made with Messrs. Taylor and Culley, of Hamilton, to do necessary preparatory formation work for the street sealing scheme. The streets to be prepared were Heuheu Street from Ruapehu Street to Mere Road and Mere Road through to the Lakefront, together with Rifle Range Road and Kaimanawa Street. The motor scoops used by the same i i firm on the Sports Ground job would be used, and it was. proposed that the resultant spoil would be used to fill depressions and hollows on the Lakefront. It was probable that rnost of the hollows there could thus be filled, so that the frontage would be Jevel and ready for future planting 'and development.
The Mayor mentioned that in the streets to be sealed trees would have to be removed where they were growing on the extra width required for the formation. One power pole would have to be moved. Cr Vedder said he assumed the streets would be brought to their permanent levels, the Mayor replying that that was so. The Council ap-r proved the action taken by the Mayor in the matter. Work was commenced on the widening of the carriage-way in Heuheu Street on Monday last, commencing at the Ruapehu Street end. During the day two .motor scoops were at work ,and were removing spoil from the roadside at the rate of a load each every eight minutes. At one stage loa'ds were being shifted at the rate of one every five minutes. The machines carry ten cubic yards of spoil.
