MEMORIAL HALL REVENUE
A statembnt of revenue and expenditure in connection with ' the administration of the War Memorial Hall, for the periodj from December 18, 1954, to June 13, 1955, was subnutted to the Boroug'h Council meeting of June 15 by the Borough TreasurerJ Mr S. Torepe. ' | The statement showed that charges made for the use of thej Hall for this period, approximately six months, totalled £212 10s, of which the sum of £52 was outstanding, comprisiBgf . various accounts owing by various local organisations. A siMj of £51 was shown as having been paid for bookings of the Hau; made in advance of June 13, 1955. . • I Expenditure was shown as £412 5s 2d, the -items being:-Jj Interest and principal on loan, £165 10s 5d; Insuranee £66j 5s; wages, clerk of works, £66 10s; wages, £61 5s 5d ; Plumbino £11 6s lOd; signwriting £14 15s; Mirrors £10 14s 9d; MiscelJ laneous £15 17s 9d. To arrive at the proportion of this total expenditare rep-J resenting current administrative expenses for the period effect-| ed, the following items, totalling £197 14s 6d, may be deductedl Wages £66 10s and £61 5s 5d, both of which are capital ehargeSl in connection-with the erection of the building; £33 2s 6d, hala of the annual insuranee premium shown; and the items sicowiy above for plumbing, signwriting and mirrors, which also. ara| capital charges. -■ Making this deduction, and assuming that the whole of th|g miscellaneous expenditure represents current administratfyg expenses, the total current expenses come to £214 10s 8d. Deducting the Hall charges for the period from this figowj the expenditure for the period is shown as^ being £2 0s 8d -mOMI than the revenue. It should be noted, oi course, that the exjj penditure does not rnclude any charge for the Hall caretaker&i wages, nor for generaf repairs and maintenance. Consideratiori of the figures would seem to give goojM grounds for believing that the Hall, within a reasonable penodj will provide a revenue sufhcient to cover repayment oi: capitjffl and interest on the' Hall Loan, as well as current administrativelj costs and repairs and maintenance. There is no doubt tha|| there will be increased bookings by outside entertainment oigawj isations as knowledge of the Hall's existence and capacity Ma comes general. And bookings of the Hall for local functi.ojM will also increase. It may be noted that the half-yearly loail charge will, in future si'x-monthly periods, be some £17 odjg more than the amount paid" during the first six-monthly. penl|| when full charges were not payable.. -JB The figures also show that the present rates charged 1«1 hire of the Hall, while likely to be sufficient to cover Hall cosfi| at a reasonablv early date, are certainlv not likely to resultiffl the Hall becoming a profit-maki'ng concern. Members of a depgl tation to the Council some ti'me ago expressed the view tnal Hall charges should not be ai'med to make it a profit-makM| business. The figures reviewed above fndicate that theiG is i present no likelihood of such- a position arising.
