Tripe and Tonsils

A Riccarton woman in a Christchurch butcher's shop asked for some tripe. Beside her, another woman remarked, in unmistakably patrician accents: "Oh, tripe. I wouldn't like to eat it. It's stomach lining, you know." To this the purchaser replied: "I know it may be common, but it's cheap." This elicited a comment about "the odd things people eat,'" but a moment later the commentator gave an order for a pound of sweetbreads. This was too much for the housewife with the tripe. "I suppose you know," she said sweetly, "that you are eating tonsiis? "—and swept out of the shop.
