MOTUTAHAE ST. GRADE

£100 Offered For Improving In a letter received at the borough council meeting on May 18, Mrs S. A. Kent referred to the steep grade of Motutahae Street, which branches at rightangles from Waiariki Road, toward the Waikato River, between the Kaimanawa Street and Tonga Street intersections. The deposit on Motutahae Street of spoil resulting from the formation of Motutere Street, it was stated, had made the grade formidable. Mrs Kent stated that she felt she was an interested party, having sold several sections at the foot of Motutahae Street, and felt bound to assist the various .purchasers in improving access. Operators of milk and other delivery services objected to taking vehicles down to the bottom. Mrs Kent offered a donation of £50 towards the re-grading of the street, the offer being open for one month, and conditional on the work being completed within six months. Messrs W. H. Kent Ltd., wrote stating that they also were interested and were prepared to pay £50 toward the cost of grading, also subject to the work being done within a reasonable time. The council asked the works committee to inspect and report on the matter. Motutahae Street is named after Motutahae Island, often popularly referred to as Cherry Island, and situated in the Waikato River i nearby. The name has appeared incorrectly on maps as "Motutahai", but the street name was corrected to "Motutahae" when a number of alterations and additions to road and street names were made recently. by the council.
