RATE PENALTY REMITTED
An Unusual Case An unusual case regarding penalties on rates was before the borough council recently, when Dr C. King, of Palmerston North, in a letter enclosing payment for rates and penalty requested that the amount of the penalty be either rebated or credited against next year's rates. The position in regard to penalties on rates is that the Audit Department requires that they cannot be remitted by a local authority when they are legally incurred. In the present case there had been an error in the assessment and owner's address, which had resulted in the rate demand not being delivered. The town clerk, Mr Torepe, stated that the matter had been referred to # the Audit Department, and advice had been received that in the present case the penalty could, in view of the circumstances, be remitted. The ratepayer's request was accordingly granted.
