TAUREWA MAORI WOMEN'S WELFARE LEAGUE

There was a large gathering at the monthly rneeting of ^ the Taurewa Maori Women's Welfare League, presided over by Mrs Hepi. Greetings were extended to Mrs Wright, Senior Welfare Officer ; Miss A. M. Brown, District Nurse, Tokaanu ; Mrs Smyth, Telegraph Department, Mangatepopo ; Mrs Kerkt, senr., of Taupo. Mrs Wright spoke of the League's Dominion Conference at Auckland and of the League's birth and development, and its appreciation of other women's organisations. Explanations were given of the Waikato Winter Show competitions. Mrs Wright also said how distressed the conference and all welfare officers were concerning liquor amongst the Maori people, and said it was a duty of the League to work to rectify this. The guest speaker, Miss Brown, spoke on district nursing, English and New Zealand baby clinics, the reasons for the low incidence of T.B. in Norwa^, the essential needs of the body, and concluded with a display of European winter clothing. Mrs N. R. Moana read a report on branch activities and thanked Mrs Wright and Miss Brown, to whom Mrs Hepi presented sprays. New members* enrolled were : Mesdames Puata, Phillips, Shelford, T. Anania, I. Anania. Observers : Mesdames Mulligan, Te Awa, M. Konui ; Messrs G. Manunui, G. Turanga, P. Thompson, N. R. Moana, M. Kaeo ; members of the Ngauruhoe Pootball Club, .and Mr W. Smiler. Competition results : Sugar bag fire screen, Mesdames White, Thompson, Ruhe; short pois, Mesdames Turanga, Moses, Manunui ; tablecloth, Mesdames Manunui, Kereopa, Ruhe ; health, Mesdames Moses, Ruhe, White ; home-made flowers, Mesdames Manunui, Turanga, Ruhe; chocolate cake, Mesdames Manunui, Turanga, Ruhe. Mesdames Ruhe and Kereopa were hostesses for the evening.
