FATAL ROAD ACCIDENT
Death Of Mr J. v. Dixon An old resident of Taupo, Mr Joseph Vernon Dixon, was seriously injured on the Lake Front Road about seven p.m. on Friday, April 22, and died later in Rotorua Hospital. Mr Dixon was walking on the highway, returning to his home, when he was struck by a motor-car, suffering compound fractures of both legs between the knees and ankles. Rain was falling at the time and visibility was bad. Dr. D. A. Richards was called to the scene and attended the injured man, who was placed in the ambulance of the Taupo St. John Ambulance Brigade and taken to Rotorua Hospital. He died about half an hour after admission. An inquest was opened on the following morning and adjourned after formal evidence of identification had been given. The funeral took place at Taupo on Anzac Day, Monday, April 25, preceded by a service in St. Andrew's Church (Anglican). The Rev. H. | Tangohau officiated both at the church and at the graveside. There was a large and representative attendance of local .residents. The Taupo Troop, Legion of Frontiersmen, under Lieutenant A. J. Buckleign, formed a guard of honour at the cemetery entrance. The news of Mr Dixon's death came as a shock to his many friends. He came to Taupo some 34 or 35 years ago. A man of quiet disposition, Mr Dixon was respeeted by all who knew him, and his unassuming friendliness had, over the years, won for him an affectionate place in the regard of many of all sections of the community. He was in his eighty-second year, having been born on Jul.y 23, 1873, at Condover, Shropshire, England.
