FORMATION OF SPORTS GROUND
At the Borough Council meeting on April 20, the Town Clerk, Mr S. Torepe, reported that an account for the excavation and formation of the Sports Ground had been received from Messrs Taylor and Culley, the contractors. The gross amount was £1275, which was based on the removal and stoekpiling of 3500 cubic yards of top soil at 2s per yard, and the excavation of 7500 cubic yards of soil at 2s, together with the replacing of the topsoil at ls per yard. The quantities of soil were taken out by Mr L. II. Cheal, of Taupo, acting as engineer for the Council on the Sports Ground project.
From their account, Mr Torepe reported, the contractors had deducted the sum of £200 as a donation toward the Sports Ground Fund, reducing the account to £1075. During discussion, the opinion was expressed by the Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, and by councillors, that an excellent job had been done, and appreciation was expressed for the generous donation made by Messrs Taylor and Culley. In approving the account for payment, the Council passed a vote of thanks and appreciation on behalf of the people of Taupo, to the contractors. The Mayor referred to the great amount of work under taken by Mr Cheal in connection with the Sports Ground job, and said that it also constituted a generous ond substantial donation to the Sports Ground, with which councillors expressed their agreement- The Mayor moved, seconded by Cr. Currie, that a letter of thanks and appreciation he sent to Mr Cheal.
