Taupo Retains Lett Cup

The annual match between Taupo and National Park for' the Lett Cup, played on Sunday, March 20, at National Park, resulted in a win for Taupo by 59 runs. Na.-ional Park wou the toss anl put Taupo jn first- Two wickets fell quickly for 12 runs, but Kennedy and Sutherland added 41 for the third wicket,- and Forster helped Sutherland to add a further 59 for the flfth wicket. Sutherland was still hitting strongly at the fal.l of the sixth wicket, 28 runs later, and shortly afterwards completed an excellent century. He retired -for 115 and the innings closed for 176. Sutherland's score included six sixes and 11 fours. The home batsmen could not score runs. against Forster's fast bowling. Kennedy was successful in obtaining three wickets at little expense, with the assistance of one excellent catch by West. - Ward also took a splendld catch to dismiss Riordan. With the advent of Sutherland at the bowling crease fours and sixes became more commonplace t-han they were even when he batted. Poole collected five sixes and two fours in his 42, and Garnett two sixes and two fours in his 25. One of Poole's biggest hits went through the windscreen of a car belonging to one of his teamsmates. The next car belonged to the Taupo skipper, Sam McKean, who w'asted no time in having the car removed to a , safer ^distance. Forster later ended the ParlvS innings for 117, having taken six wickets, five elean bowled. At the conclusion of the game, the donor, Mr S. Lett, presented the Lett Cup to the Taupo skipper, and expressed the hope that this fixture should not be allowed to lapse. Taupo have now held the cup since.February, 1952. Taupo, first innings: G.
