CASE OF THE LUCKY PUNTER
The holiday punter walked into the Taupo T.A.B. and asked for a ticket on No. 4 in Race No. 5. Having received it, and made casual reference to the horse's name, he departed. Later, the T.A.B clerk hoticed that the horse mentioned by the investor was No. 4, not in Race No. 5, but in another race, and realised j that his customer had made a mistake. Later still, he was intrigued tot note that the horse actually backed had paid a dividend of close on a century. Next day the visitor came in to record further bets, and was astounded to learn of his lucky error. Jubilation moderated as he realised that he had thrown his ticket away. Could he use the telephone to ring his hotel and tell them not to empty the waste-pap-er basket in his bedroom? The query gave the T.A.B. man an idea. He went to the waste-paper box into which the sweepi-ngs from the office floor had gone.. The third crumpled ticket picked out was the careless bettor's discarded title to close on a hundred pounds. He walked out with his unexpected windfall. The sequel came when he sought out the T.A.B. clerk and presented him with a carton containing a share of the divvy in liquid form.
