BOROUGH BY-LAWS
Sir,— In your issue of December 31 I was pleased to read of progress being made by the Taupo County Council as regards by-laws. Are the residents and holidaymakers of the Taupo Borough aware that its first Borough Council has no up-to-date by-laws in print, but only an old set printed about 1940? Over two years ago we underwood these by-laws were being rediafted and ever since then they have either been in the hands of the Council's lawyer or the printer at least so we are told. Nobody knows the by-laws although some people think they do. Look at some of the new buildings in the Borough ,and then think of the following by-laws you may have been told about:— (1) No holiday accommodation to be less than.300 sq. feet. (2) No bedroom or bathroom to open off a kitchen. (3) A permit is to be taken out for every ' building. (4) Certain rooms to have a required amount of light and air. (5) Temporary accommodation has to be only for a specified time and then certain conditions have to exist and requirements be met. All of the above have been broken in the Borough recently, and , although one case has been investigated by the Council no action ] has been taken so far, and in fact breaches have occurred since then ! Also we are told that no building, whether garage or residence, is to be within 25 feet of the rnfl.rl
Last year we saw a house built within a few feet of the front boundary, and during the recent holidays a garage erected on the boundary. The sub-framing is supposed to be heart native timbers, but not all green pine as is the case with one new place. I do not wish to cast aspersions on anybody, all I wish to see is a law for everybody, not a law that varies from day to day according to the person. I am, etc.,
"CIVIS."
