TAUPO TIMES' FOURTH YEAR
WITH this issue, No. 155, the "Taupo Times" commences its fourth year of publication. It is perhaps fitting . to quote a f ew lines from the editorial article appeairing in the first issue, which I was published on January 16, 1952. "The paper has been launched," it was stated, "in the belief that with the co-operation of the people of the Taupo Country, the enterprise wiirbe successful. 'Whether that belief is justified remains to be seen. Co-operation is essential. Newspapers are apt to be expensive undertakings. The long history of the Press is littered with the wrecks of newspaper enterPrises founded on f aith and high hopes, and doomed to disaster." The article then outlined the problems facing the new paper in a comparatively small and scattered community, stated that the co-operation of the • public was earnestly invited, particularly in the direction of supplying inf ormation of local interest, and emphasised that the paper would be concerned chiefly in publishing local news. It may be said at once that the reception accorded to the "Times" Dver the past three years, and the so-operation given by all sections 3f the public to those concerned vith its production, have surpassed 3xpectations. And while the re:eption may justifiably be held to :
j indicate a degree of public appreciation of the service rendered to the community by the paper, it must be added that those concerned in the paper's production are fully aware of shortcomings, and alive to the need of endeavouring always to improve the standard of that service. The opening of the paper's fourth year brings a change that emphasises one of the difficulties confronting the printing and publishing trade today, namely the difficulty of obtaining sufficient printing staff. This, together with increasing pressure of work, has resulted in our printers, the Te Aroha News Printing and Publishing Co., Ltd., of Te Aroha, being compelled to relinquish their connection with the "Times." Relations between our two companies have been most cordial, and all those connected with the "Times" sincerely regret that circumstances compel the break. We have gladly acceded to a request from the "Te Aroha News" that they might be allowed to include a short message in this issue, and this will be found below. Future issues of the "Times" are to be printed by East Waikato Publishers Ltd., of Morrinsville, publishers of the Morrinsville Star and the Putaruru Press. The "Times" will continue to be published on Friday in each week, . as hitherto.
