ACTIVITIES OF TAUPO BUSINESSMEN
SMALL ATTENDANCE AT ANNUAL MEETING "It woud seem to me that members of this Association are only interested in its activities when things are gOing wrohg," said Mr W. N. Morris, President of the Taupo Businessmen's Association, speaking at the Annual Meeting in reference to the poor attendance of members. The Annual Report of the Association stressed some of the past year's chief activities, including establishment of. an information board in Tongariro Street for the benefit of visitors. It was stated that information was being compiled for use on the board. The cost of this board had been defrayed by subsidy from the Borough Council, and by the organisation of raffles to cover the balance. The Committee had taken a close interest in the Saturday closing question and without taking sides had organised several meetings to allow the matter to be adequately discussed. Deputations had ibeen sent to the Borough Council regarding rubbish collection facilities, and to the Postmaster regarding the establishment of telephone boxes and posting boxes in certain parts of the town. Three of these mail boxes had now been established and a telephone box outside the Post Office had resulted in less overcrowding at the Post Office counter. Representations had been made to the Ministry of Works and to the recently appointed Taupo County Commissioner for the strengthening of the Pueto Bridge on the Broadlands-Taupo road so that Broadlands and Reporoa residents could obtain better access to Taupo. The Association also had in hani- a petition for the provision of a 24-hour telephone service for Taupo.
