QUEEN CARNIVAL NOTES

Citizen's Queen Quiz. As no correct solution was received, in the Citizens' Queen Quiz No. 2, no prize was awarded. The answers to the Quiz were as follows: — (1) 1837. (2) Underground. The Christmas Decorations raffle organised by the Cltizens' Queen Committee was won by Gillian Woodward. He He He Headquarters Hut. The headquarters hut for the use of the three Queen Committees was duly erected last week, on the grassed space on the north side of the Post Office. The work was carried out by a "working bee" of carpenters, both professional and amateur, recruited from supporters of the various Queen Candidates, and electric lighting was installed by other helpers ready for Frlday night's activities. The three stalls allocated by the Central Committee by drawing lots. The Maori Queen has the stall next Post Office, the Citizens' Queen the centre stall and the Sports Queen the right-hand stall. All stalls did a brisk Friday night's business, selling a wide range of articles. ❖ ❖ h Donations of Timber. At the meeting of the Central Queen Carnival Committee on Thursday, October 7, the Chairman, Col. J. D. Swan, reported that the timber for the Carnival hut near the Post Office, Tongariro Street, had been donated by Mr W. J. McKean and by Messrs Tuck Bros. The Committee members expressed their appreciation of the donors' help. T* ^ Central Committee Meetings. The Central Queen Carnival Committee is to meet every other Thursday at the School, at 8 p.m., the next meeting being on October 21. •r* n* Closing Date and Crowning. At its meeting on October 7, the Central Committee decided that the closing date of the Carnival should be Saturday, January 15, 1955. An amendment that the final date be December 18 was lost. Messrs I. Logan and G. Foote raised the matter of a Carnival opening ceremony^ and the general feeling of the Committee was that the Queen candidates' should be presented to the public at such a ceremony. The Chairman suggested that members wait until the War Memorial Hall were opened, when the candidates could be presented, each Committee also arranging a function to be held at the same time. It was decided that at the coronation ceremony the three Queen candidates be limited to two ladies-in-waiting and two pages each. i He H» 5j» Cups For Competition. Mr A. Grace asked, at the Central Committee meeting, whether the three cups donated by the Tuwharetoa Trust Board for an earlier carnival could be used for competition in a function to be arranged by the Maori Queen Committee. The Chairman, Col. Swan, said that the cups were available and should be used by the Maori Committee. , ❖ He He Carnival Results Indicator. At the Borough Council meeting on Tuesday, October 5, the Mayor reported that the indicator signboard, erected near the Post Office in connection with ; the Sports Ground Queen Carnival, had been

made by Mr J. W. Robertson without charge, as a donatlon to the Sports Ground development i campaign. The sign-writing for the board had been done by Mr K. W. Mayclair, also as a donation. The flags for the board had been made by Mrs Currie, also free of charge. Councillors expressed their appreciation and passed a vote of thanks to the donors for their help.
