TRAFFIC CONTROL
FULL-TIME INSPECTOR WANTED At a meeting of the Borough Council held on Wenesday, September 8, the question of a full-time 1 Traffic Inspector of the Transport Department being stationed in the Borough was discussed. On the motion of Cr J. D. Swan, seconded by Cr C. J. Vedder, it was decided that the Council should make an offer of £300 to the Transport Department toward the cost of a Traffic Inspector being stationed in Taupo, plus a percentage of drivers' license fees. In a report td the Council meeting held on September 15, Senior Traffic Officer B. P. Muggeridge stated that during the month of August nine applicants for drivers' licenses were tested, of whom two were failed through lack of knowledge of the Regulations. Twenty-four heavy motor vehicles were stopped, 12 estimated and 18 weighed and of this number 7 were reported for exceeding the permitted axle weight. Ten road users were warned and eight reported for various breaches of the Regulations. Mr Muggeridge recommended that angle parking lines and bus stop markings be repainted as soon as convenient after consideration had been given to whether the Verges of Tongariro Street had consolidated. (This work had been held up owing to the sealing of the verges of the street being soft, and it had been treated by the Ministry of Works with a shingle covering in an endeavour to harden it).
