LAKE FRONT HIGHWAY
WORKS MINISTER WANTS EXTRA HALF CHAIN STRIP At the Borough Council meeting on September 15, a plan prepared for the Council by Mr A. L. Gabites, Town Planning consultant, showea an alternative method of providing an extra half-chain of road reserve required along portion of the Lake front highway by the Minister of Works. The area of highway affected lies between the Old Napier Road, near Edgewater Lodge, and Taharepa Road/ An objection, to the Borough's Town Planning Scheme has been lodged by the Minister of Works, on the ground that a road reserve of 1-i chains is required for the highway and that this has not so far been provided for. A plan accompanying a letter from the Minister shows an extra road reserve strip 33 feet in width along the Lake side of the highway from the Old Napier Road intersection to the Taharepa Road intersection. Taking this strip for high[way purposes would interfere with | a large number of existing resi- | dences and garages, built on the Lake side of the highway between the Waipahihi Avenue intersection and Taharepa Road. The, Council's alternative plan suggests that the required halfchain strip should be provided on the opposite or northern side of the highway from Taharepa Road to Waipahihi Avenue, wh£re no buildings would be affected. From" Waipahihi Avenue south to the Old Taupo Road intersection the plan shows the strip on the south or Lake side of the road as in the Departmental plan. The Council's plan was forwarded some time ago to the Minister with the suggestion that it would be advantageous to all parties* concerned if the matter could be considered before the commencement of the hearing of Town Planning objections.
