HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY
TAUPO BEATS PUTARURU IN SENIOR AND JUNIOR GAMES On Saturday, September 11, the Putaruru High School sent its 1st XV, and a 2nd XV of under 8i stone players to Taupo, both being defeated by the local school, seniors by 8 — 6, juniors by 8 — nil. The visitors, in the senior game soon settled down and dominated the first half, getting the first score when Smith drop-kicked a goal from inside the 25 after 15 minutes play. Several promising Putaruru back movements were broken by Taupo's solid defence. Half time came with Taupo throwing the ball about in great style but unable to get across. The Taupo forwards played a much tighter game in the second half and held their own. Their backs began to function, with K. Rameka cutting through consistently, and after five minutes the ball passed along the line for winger W. Turetahi to score fifteen yards from the posts and make the score 3 all. Turetahi converted his own try, 5 — 3. With Taupo attacking, a poor kick-through was gathered for Putaruru by Vance, who ran 75 yards to score wide out for a lead of 6 — 5. Taupo returned to attack and A. Crowther scored from a loose ruck. The. kick was disallowed for handling and the score was 8 — 6 in Taupo's favour. Putaruru were always ready to change defence to attack, but Taupo kept attacking, the game ending without further score to give Taupo a two point win. Mr W. iGosling was the referee. ;
