SMOKE RINGS FROM NGAURUHOE

TAUPO TRAMPERS SEE NINE A Taupo party which spent last week-end at the Mangatepopo Hut, at the western base of Ngauruhoe volcano, saw nine of the smoke rings which were recently described by motorists on the Desert Road. Mr A. McKean, of Taupo, states that the rings were seen to rise following explosions from the crater. Though the "smoke" from the crater was being blown down the cone by the south-east wind~ the rings rose to a * considerable height and drifted away.

They travelled about three miles, Mr McKean estimated, and none were seen to break. Some retained a circular shape, others elongated into the shape of a banana, and eventually disappeared suddenly in a curious manner, the impression being as though they had "fallen" from sight over an invisible aerial cliff. Mr McKean said the mountain was producing a constant succession of explosions during their stay at Mangatepopo, a particularly heavy series shaking and rattling the hut on Saturday night.
