GOLF CLUB NOTES
An interesting finish to the Flag match played by the men on Saturday, August 7, was witnessed when L. Smith, with two strokes in hand, carried the Flag well up the 19th fairway, only to be outclassed by G. Sutherland, who went to the 19th tee with 6 strokes in hand, and finished near the pin on the 19th green. The best scores returned for the 18 holes were G. Sutherland nett 64; L. Smlth nett 68; T. Price and E. Ryan nett 70's. On Saturday, August 14, the men will play the first qualifying round of their championship. The second round will be played on the following Saturday. The final of the Captain's Trophy was played on Sunday, August 8, when E. J. Ryan defeated J. Hurrell 6 and 5. On Thursday, August 5, the ladies' played the first of two rounds of the Nancy MacCormack Memorial Foursome. This Foursome is played.by all Ladies' Clubs in New Zealand, between August 1 and 15, and is won by the pair with the lowest aggregate Medal scores. The best scores in the first round were Miss Branson and Mrs Irving 92-18i-73i; Mrs Hullten and Mrs Mclsaac 102-22-80; Mrs Irvine and Mrs Graham 115-31-84. Despite cold conditions the course is more than full on Saturdays and Sundays, and the opening of the new 9 holes will be a great asset to members and visitors. The new grass is standing up to the cold winter very well, and as soon as the spring comes should come away well. A fairly extensive planting plan has been worked out, and is being proceeded with.
