UNITED BEAT C.O.B. The Garrett Shield game at Taupo on Saturday last saw United d,efeat College Old Boys 12—11. United' scored three tries, none of which were converted, and kicked a penalty goal, while Old Boys scored three tries, one only being converted. The game was fafct and open. Although Old Boys played with a strong southerly wind behind them in the first half they failed to take advantage of it, and United had the territorial advantage most of this half. The first score came ten minutes from the start when S. Kereopa went over for United, W. Rickit failing with the kick. Seven minutes later W. Seow scored an equalising try for College, which remained unconverted to make the tally three all. Within a couple of minutes J. Biddle made the C.O.B. score up to 6 with another unconverted try, followed quickly by a try scored for United by P. Ellis, the first half ended with the score 6 — 6. About ten minutes after resumption J. Biddle (Old Boys) got away on his own from near halfway, with the, ball at his toe, scoring a try which Wall converted to give Old Boys an li — 6 lead. Both teams continued to keep up the pace till a penalty, awarded to United, gave Wallace Rickit his chance at goal and a fine kick reduced the Cdllege lead to 11 — 9. United continued to press and a try by Robert Rameka, about eight or ten minutes before time, gave them a one point lead with the score 12 — 11. C.O.B. tried hard in the last few minutes, but the United defence was equal to the demand and the game ended with the scores unchanged, United 12, Old Boys 11. Tongariro^ Beat Maroa In a very even tussle on Sunday, July 11, Tongariro notched their first victory of the season by defeating Maroa 9 — 3, three penalty goals to a try.
Play commenced with Tongariro attacking strongly but the Maroa defence held and in turn Maroa attacked strongly but could not break through. The teams defended &nd attacked alternately unfil Kopu opened the scoring for Tongariro, kicking a penalty goal from ten yards in and some 35 yards away, 3 — nil. There was no change at the interval. Maroa attacked from the whistle and shortly afterward Paora finished off a movement to score well out, 3 all. Tongariro retaliated and Kopu again goaled from a penalty to "make the score 6 — 3 in favour of Tongariro. With ten minutes to go he repeated the performance, putting Tongariro in a winning position, 9 — 3. Maroa counter-at-tacked until the final whistle but ' ' V / . . . ■&' t I could not break through Tongariro's defence.
Taupo and Kuratau tried conclusions at Tokaanu on Saturday, July 10, Taupo winning 8 — nil after a somewhat scrappy game. Tries for the winners were scored by Macken and Tom Curham, Frank Reid being responsible for the conversion of one try. Mr Gosling was the referee. Mr Kohika refereed the Tongariro-Maroa game, and Mr R. Lang the C.O.B.-United game.
