MR GOOSMAN AT TAUPO
MEETING WITH COUNCIL The Hon. W. S. Goosman, Minister of Works, met the Taupo Borough Council at the Borough Chambers at 3.45 p.m. on Thursday, May 20. Prior to the meeting, the Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, had visited the Ministry of Works Highway Depot with Mr Goosman. The Council's desire that the land at present occupied by the Depot, which was originally a reserve should be vacated, was explained to the Minister, Who was reminded by the Mayor that he had agreed to its removal some two years ago. The land was urgently needed fon enlarging the recreation reserve for football and other purposes. Cf. Young pointed out that a reserve, which had been regarded as available for football purposes, had been taken over for married men's housing by the Geo-thermal Project. The need for re-alignment and reconstruction of the main highway along the Lake front was also stressed by the Mayor, and a request made for the levelling of spoil on the area between the Municipal Motor Camp and the Hydro Dam. The spoil was left when the Dam was built and the area was needed for expansion of che motor camp .
Mr Goosman said he would see what could be done as soon as he returned to Wellington. He agreed that the Lake front highway was in need of reconstruction. He mentioned that a six mile deviation of the Atiamuri-Wairakei highway was to be done this year, from the other side of Oruanui to Wairakei. When the highway was shifted the old road would become a County road.
