TAUPO'S CLAIMS AS TOURIST RESORT
REQUEST TO BE MADE TO TOURIST DEPT. MINISTER At last week's Borough Council meeting Cr. J. D. Swan brought up the matter of Taupo's position as a national tourist resort, and maintained that it had a claim to Government financial assistance to enable it to improve facilities and amenities which were necessary, and which could not be regarded entirely as the sole responsibility, financially, of the Borough itself. Cr. Swan referred to what had been done for many years by the Government in Rotorua. The Mayor, Mr J. E. Story, and other councillors were in general agreement with the suggestion, and after discussion it was agreed to lay the matter before the Minister in charge of the Tourist Department. One direction in which councillors considered financial assistance would be useful was in the construction of a refreshment kiosk on the Lake front in the vicinity of the Taharepa Domain, and in the development of a thermal bath there on the site of the well-known natural bathing pool. A preliminary sketch plan of such a scheme was made for the Council some little time ago by Mr Gabites, the Council's town planning consultant, and it was considered this could be forwarded to the Minister. Assistance with a scheme for providing bathing-sheds and generally improving conditions at the neariby popular bathing beach was also mentioned.
