MANY PARENTS ATTEND DEMONSTRATION
TEACHING OF READING A demonstration of methods used in the teaching of reading was given at the Taupo District High School on Wednesday night, April 14, under the auspices of the Home and School Association. It was the largest meeting the Association has had, and parents who attended appeared to be greatly interested. Mr J. R. Osborne, headmaster, presided in the absence of the Association president, Mr E. R. Hoy. Mrs S. Salt, Infant Mistress, gave a general explanation of the subject, commencing with the prereading stage, in which pictures are used to build up visual discrimination. Following her talk, Mrs Salt gave a demonstration lesson dealing with the teaching of the first word actually learned as a word, and similar demonstrations were given by Miss Denize and Miss Walters dealing with later stages. Parents assisted in the demonstrations by taking the place of pupils, and questions were later asked and answered dealing with reading, lefthandedness and other matters. A display of material used in teaching reading had been arranged on tables by the teaching staff. At the close of the meeting Mr C. B. Dent expressed the thanks of those present for the demonstration provided and their interest in it. Supper was then provided. The success of the meeting indicates the interest taken by mahy parents in modern school methods, and it is possible that similar demonstrations of other stages in the school course may be arranged.
