Blackberry on Reserve. A ratepayer, Mrs M. T. Miller, in a letter to the Council asked that something be done with regard to blackberry growing in the Tama-mut-u Street Reserve, which was invading her section. The matter was left to the Mayor to go into with the Ministry of Works, who have a lease of the reserve. ❖ ❖ ❖ New Tongariro Bridge. The contractors have now driven many of the piles for the new Tongariro River bridge at . Turangi. Though test bores put down before iwork commenced suggested that small boulders only would be encountered, actual work has proved much more difficult than anticipated. The use of explosives has been necessary in foundation work for Pier B, and the assistance of well-drillers has been necessary to sink a preliminary 12 inch hole. ❖ ❖ ❖ The Unexpected Answer. Youth in Invercargill this week has demonstrated its ability to produce the quick reply that comes from sudden inspiration. In the first instance, a six-year-old girl was noticed to be neglecting the usual preparations for school. Asked for an explanation, she gave a solemn reply. "I've given up school for Lent," she said. An eight-year-old boy produced an eager answer to a question of a different kind. He was listening to the "quiz" session in the children's radio hour, in which an inquiry was made to discover whether the children knew what was meant by "a member of the male sex/1 "I know— the postman," said the bright young listener.
