COUNCIL CONSIDERS ROADING STANDARDS

REQUIREMENTS IN NEW SUBDIVISIONS At a special meeting held on Thursday evening, March 25, the Taupo Borough Couneil considered the roading standards to be required in future sub-divisions, and had before it a report on the subject prepared by the Council's consulting engineers, Messrs. Mandeno/ Lee and Brown. This report was published in the "Times" of March 26. Hitherto the Couneil has required only that roads be formed to the specified width, leaving the natural pumice surface, with appropriate provision for stormwater disposal. The report was obtained following discussiion at previous Couneil meetings, in which the problem of the cost of future maintenance of new subdivisional roads was mentioned, and that of the need, at the present stage in the Borough's development, to endeavour to reduce that cost by requiring higher formation standards before accepting dedication of new roads, in line with requirements now in force in other towns. Following a general discussion, the Couneil decided that in the Commereial, Service Industrial and Light Industrial areas all streets, before dedication was accented.

should be kerbed and channelled, footpaths formed, carriageways formed and sealed to a width of 22 feet kerb to kerb to specifications laid down by the Couneil, and stormwater drains constructed to the Council's requirements. With regard to residential areas it was decided that in all future residential subdivisions roads should have a sealed carriageway twenty feet in width, with grass verges on both sides six feet to ten feet wide, as may be decided by the Couneil, and with stormwater drains constructed as directed by the Couneil, the overall formation to be from boundary unless otherwise directed by the Couneil. In the Heavy Industrial area it was decided that all roads have a carriageway 22 feet in width sealed to the Council's specification, the balance of the road to be grassed verge, formed to the satisfaction of the Couneil, with stormwater drainage constructed as directed by the Couneil. The overall width of roads was • to be one chain.
