CRICKET NOTES

REPOROA DEFEATED Reporoa played their first match of the season on February 28, when Taupo travelled to the farming district to play on their concrete wicket. This was gtlso the first time that Taupo have played on a concrete wicket for two seasons, and they took advantage of the very eveii bounce of the ball to pile on a good score led by an excellent century by Rex Beale, his first in Taupo cricket. Reporoa were short of players when the game commenced, but batting first they lost six of their wickets for 33, and as the remainder of their players were expected to take their plac'es after lunch, Taupo took the unusual course of allowing the home team to complete its first innings after it had itself batted. Beale came in to bat when two wickets were down for only 14 runs and his innings which included 4 sixes and six fours showed good judgment in picking the right ball to hit. He was joined by Frank McKean in a partnership of 93 for the 5th wicket. Shortly after Beale retired with 103 to his credit Sam McKean closed the innings at 201 for 8 wickets without Sutherland or McKean himself batting. In their second innings Reporoa fared no better than they did in the first and were dismissed by Sam McKean, Sutherland, Forster and Jack Smith who shared the wickets evenly, for only 31 runs. Beale's century, although not so devastating as Sutherland's against the Golf Club a fortnight earlier, was nevertheless scored in excellent time as it took less than two hours. It is unfortunale for Taupo that he announced on the following day that he would be leaving Taupo shortly as he has shown splendid form this season with the bat apart from his value as a wicket keeper who always keeps the batsmen on the alert.
